Seidenberg “really happy” with contract extension

It was no secret that locking up top-tier defensemen Dennis Seidenberg was “pretty high” on Peter Chiarelli’s to do list heading into the season. This season marks the fourth and final year of his current contract. Letting Seidenberg reach free agency would have been unwise.

Chiarelli and the Bruins crossed one important piece of duty of the list and wasted little time in doing so on Friday, inking the big German blue liner to a 4-year/$16m contract extension.

Seidenberg had previously voiced his desire to stay in Boston. The thirty-two year old veteran bruiser has been a nice fit within the Bruins system since coming aboard in 2010. “He plays our style, heavy game. A heavy game that we like,” said Chiarelli.

Seidenberg’s wish was granted, as his new contract comes hand in hand with a no trade clause that will guarantee him a stay with team for at least the first 2 ½ years of the deal. The remaining year and a half grants him partial trade protection. Nonetheless it’s certainly a fantastic agreement for both sides.

“I think it’s a deal that works out for both sides. I wanted to be here. They wanted me here,” said Seidenberg. “I’m really happy to be here for another five years.”

And how could the Bruins not want him here. He’s been an essential piece to their recent post-season success, as he’s been dominant playing alongside Zdeno Chara. Most importantly he is model representation of the game Claude Julien preaches.

“Seids has been a real solid player for us. He does all the things that a strong, hard-nosed defenseman has to do. He’s pretty durable and reliable,” added Julien when asked about what the signing means to him.
