Vereen suffers broken wrist

After a disheartening showing from Stevan Ridley on Sunday and a breakout effort from Shane Vereen, it looked as if a change to New England’s backfield was inevitable. Ridley started the game but was then benched after an ill-advised fumble in the second-quarter. He did not play another snap. Vereen posted his first career 100+ yard rushing effort in wake of the opportunity in taking over as New England’s feature running back.

Though the Patriots were informed Monday that Vereen had suffered a broken bone in his wrist. The injury is one that required surgery (which he underwent Monday) and as a result will be sidelined for up to 4 weeks.

Fox Sports 1’s Jay Glazer reports the injury occurred on the game’s opening play. Vereen played the duration of the game and did not feel any injury symptoms until the conclusion of the Patriots 23-21 victory over Buffalo.

With Vereen now out it looks as if Ridley will have an opportunity to make amends for a frustrating opening day performance.

LaGarrette Blount and Leon Washington will back up Ridley on Thursday against the Jets.
