Conference Call: Chiarelli on Rask, Jagr, and Alfredsson.

Peter Chiarelli

In the calm before the storm prior to the free agency period that begins on Friday, Bruins’ general manager Peter Chiarelli held a conference call earlier today with reporters. During the conference call, several different topics were addressed including:

  • a Tuukka Rask deal
  • a need for right-wingers
  • Anton Khudobin
  • an interest in obtaining Daniel Alfredsson of the Ottawa Senators

Peter Chiarelli spoke during his conference call about how he wanted to re-sign Tuukka Rask. Rask came into the 2012-2013 season with a one-year deal. “I feel confident that we will get a deal done on Rask in short order,” Chiarelli announced. He hopes that he can finish up the deal before July 5th, when the free agency period begins at noon and Rask would become a restricted free agent. He also stressed that he was confident that even if Rask entered free agency a deal could be accommodated.

Chiarelli also addressed the need to find a replacement for Nathan Horton at right wing. Although many people believed that the Bruins had parted ways with Jaromir Jagr, Chiarelli said that he is thinking of “circling back” to the veteran right-winger. He said that Jagr is “on a list of a bunch of guys.”  Other Bruins right wingers currently include: Rich Peverley, Tyler Seguin, Jared Knight, and Jordan Caron. It would definitely be interesting to see if  Jagr will return to Boston in a Bruins’ sweater once again next season if the Bruins do decide to revisit their options with him.

Chiarelli had met with Vincent Lecavalier but didn’t pursue him any further as he would prefer a “natural winger.” Lecavalier typically plays center but would have been willing to move to play right wing. Lecavalier signed a 5 year $22.5 million deal with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Chiarelli was asked if he had met with Daniel Alfredsson, 40-year-old captain of the Ottawa Senators. Chiarelli would not confirm if a conversation had taken place with Alfredsson. Pierre LeBrun from ESPN.com said in reports that Chiarelli and Alfredsson had touched base.

Chiarelli also mentioned that the Bruins would look into the trade market and that there are a “couple of trades” the Bruins are exploring further to save cap space. Even though Marc Savard is on long-term injured reserve, the Bruins still do not have much cap space. Among players you could expect to see Chiarelli shopping around could be either Rich Peverely or Chris Kelly.

Chiarelli was asked about renewing goaltender Anton Khudobin’s contract as a backup for Tuukka Rask and responded that he would deal with Khudobin and his agent once everything was worked out with Rask. It is more important for Chiarelli to focus on signing Rask before he deals with Khudobin.

Chiarelli’s conference call proved that there is a lot of work to do with the free agency period opening up on Friday. The Bruins are looking forward to improving the team over the course of the offseason enough to hopefully find themselves back in the Stanley Cup Finals once again.
