Stephen Drew left the game yesterday with hamstring tightness. He is out of the lineup and there are no indications as to if he will be put on the DL. In the mean time, the Red Sox decided to call up minor league utility man Jonathan Diaz to have another infielder in Boston. Diaz is a career minor league player who has spent 8 seasons in various organizations. He has hit .242/.350/.341 in 55 games this season in Pawtucket.  Diaz is a utility type player and can play second base, shortstop, and third base. Today (6/29/13)  he will be playing his first game in the MLB and will be starting at third base.

Diaz was not on the 40 man roster and a move had to happen to get him on the roster. The Red Sox designated Clayton Mortensen for assignment. In 30 innings this season with the Red Sox, Mortensen pitched to the tune of a 5.34 ERA. He has been a key long man for the past few seasons for the Red Sox. However, Alex Wilson has  become the Red Sox long man and has pitched 23.1 innings with an ERA of 3.47 since his call up. There is a good chance that Mortensen gets picked up by another team, as are always looking for a reliable innings eating reliever.
