Buchholz and Ross Injured, Wilson and Lavarnway Up

Clay Buchholz threw a bullpen session today between the first and second games of the double-header with the Tampa Bay Rays. After the bullpen session, he continued to have discomfort in his neck and was placed on the 15 day DL. The DL stint is back dated to June 9th. Before landing on the DL, Buchholz was 9-0 with a 1.71 ERA in 12 games this season for the Sox. Many were hoping this may be the year Buchholz takes the next step by pitching at least 200 innings. The longer this issue lingers the less likely that milestone will be met. With Buchholz on the DL, the Red Sox have called up catcher Ryan Lavarnway. Lavarnway will be making his second stay in Boston this season. In 3 games with the Red Sox this season he is hitting .250/.222/.375.

Early indications are that Allen Webster will be starting in place of Buchholz. In two starts with the Red Sox this year, Webster is the owner of a 0-1 record with a 11.74 ERA. He pitched well in parts of each of his two starts but he left pitches up and over the heart of the plate at times, which is when most of the damage was done. If he starts against the Tigers this Saturday, he will have his hands full. The Tigers are known to be a crushing offense that can get a pitcher in trouble early and often. To make it tougher,he would be facing Max Scherzer who is 10-0  with a 3.08 ERA this season.

David Ross Put on the 7-Day Concussion DLdavid-ross1-540x385

David Ross has been placed on the 7-day DL with concussion symptoms after taking a few balls off of his helmet Friday night in Baltimore. Ross spent time on the DL with the same issue back on May 12-24.  This season with the Red Sox David Ross is hitting .185/.274/.400. His replacement on the roster is relief pitcher Alex Wilson, who is making his third stay with the Red Sox this year and has a record of 1-1 with a 2.61 ERA in 17 games.

Bad Timing

These injuries come at a bad time, as the next few weeks will be tough for the Red Sox. Teams like the Tigers, Rockies, and the hot as of late Blue Jays are all lined up for the Red Sox. Hopefully, both injuries will be short term fixes, and the Red Sox will  get both Buchholz and Ross back shortly.
